How to install Claude Code on Windows using the official PowerShell installer, step by step.
Claude Code is Anthropic’s AI coding assistant for the terminal. This tutorial shows how to find the official instructions, run the PowerShell installer, handle the PATH setup note, launch Claude Code and sign in.
WHAT YOU NEED
- A Claude plan or Anthropic Console account with access to Claude Code
- A supported 64-bit version of Windows
- An internet connection
- PowerShell
You do not need to run PowerShell as Administrator.
INSTALLATION STEPS Search “Claude Code terminal” and open the official result from code.claude.com. Find the Windows PowerShell installation command and copy it:
irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex Press the Windows key, search for PowerShell and open it. Paste the installation command into PowerShell and press Enter. Wait for the installation to finish. The installer may not display a progress bar while downloading. When the installation finishes, check whether Setup notes say that Claude Code’s installation folder is missing from your PATH. If you see that note, return to the official documentation and open the Windows troubleshooting section. Copy the official PATH command, paste it into PowerShell and press Enter. Close every PowerShell or Terminal window, then open a new PowerShell window. Type the following command and press Enter:
claude Select your Claude account, complete the browser sign-in and follow the prompts.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If PowerShell says that “claude” is not recognized, its installation folder may not be included in your user PATH yet.
Use the current PATH command from the Windows troubleshooting section of Anthropic’s official documentation. After running it, close PowerShell completely and open a new window before trying again.
If the installer reports another error, check the official terminal guide for the latest Windows instructions.
