Before Building AI we should First Understand Natural Intelligence | Andrew Brown | Testflix 2025
Before building artificial intelligence, it’s worth asking whether we truly understand natural intelligence. Just as early pioneers of flight studied the principles of aerodynamics and observed how birds fly, this session argues that progress in AI requires a deeper understanding of human intelligence and the knowledge that already exists across related disciplines.
In this talk, Andrew examines human memory and seven of its commonly cited “shortcomings,” showing how these traits are actually adaptive solutions shaped by evolution. By reframing these features as strengths rather than flaws, the session highlights how studying natural intelligence can offer valuable insights into solving some of the toughest challenges AI still struggles with today.

About the Speaker:
Dr Andrew Brown is an independent test consultant. He leads research into why we humans make mistakes that lead to software defects and other problems. His research includes a recently published a book on technical debt.
He has 25 years’ experience in the software industry. Previous roles include Consultant, Trainer, Head of QA at HMV, and a test manager in Japan.
He holds a degree in Physics & Maths, an MBA from Warwick Business School and a PhD from Imperial College.
