It’s hard to believe that we are now over 30 years into data warehousing. In that time, we have seen major changes in tools to help user report on and analyse data. In the last twenty years, we have seen the evolution from reporting, ad hoc analysis and advanced analytics. Today, BI/Analytics is a mature market with self-service BI and visual analysis standards in most organisations with self-service data preparation also widely deployed.

The Qlik April 2020 product release accelerates the path to success for our customers, delivering significant improvements across the Qlik product portfolio. This release is our first synchronized release across the Data Integration and Data Analytics product platforms.

Back in 1985, Simple Minds sang “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” the soundtrack to – what is IMHO – one of the greatest movies of the ‘80s: “The Breakfast Club.” The song famously asks us not to forget, and – if any of the wedding parties I’ve attended are anything to go by – we certainly haven’t. However, when it comes to our sensitive data, that’s not always the case.

As a kid, I loved the TV show “Knight Rider.” But, for me, the star of the show wasn’t David Hasselhoff, it was the intelligent automobile KITT. KITT – the Knight Industries Two Thousand – was smart, funny and sarcastic, which is always well received by us Brits.

For this blog post, I’m going to take a step back and not go into data visualization best practices. Rather, I’m going to explore what you can do with your data before arriving at a final visualization – what I like to call “re-expressing” your data. Accordingly, we are going to look at the topic of transforming your data.

In February 2017, I was out on a routine training ride when I made a turn on loose gravel. Next thing I knew, I was laying on the pavement. Just like that, I broke my hip and collar bone, and I knew I woudn’t be able to race in the Ironman Lake Placid that year. So, I adjusted from racing to recovery. And, I’m happy to report, I returned to racing in 2019, completing the Ironman Lake Placid that year.

When Jackie Edwards wrote “Keep On Running” back in 1965, he certainly wasn't thinking about the future of computing. But, it's the Spencer Davis Group grooves that is the soundtrack playing in my head when I think about Kubernetes and the business value it brings. A pillar of 3rd-Generation BI, “Democratization of Data,” is the critical first step in maximizing the value of your BI solution. But, this means more than just simply opening up the information floodgates. That is not a formula for success. There are several important things to consider when democratizing data throughout your organization. I’ve outlined five of those key considerations below.

Over the course of my career in Financial Services, I have struggled with how few options I really had when it came to delivering the right information, to the right people, at the right time. It sounds sort of ridiculous considering how much time, money and effort the firms, for which I worked, spent on data warehouses, reporting systems, business intelligence tools and advanced analytics.
